Those tiny paws and wagging tail are easy to fall in love with — but choosing the right puppy, at the right time, for the right household takes careful thought.
As part of my work, I often speak to families who wish they had asked a few key questions before collecting their puppy. A little preparation can make the difference between a joyful experience and a stressful one.
Start with your lifestyle
Before thinking about breeds or colours, consider your day-to-day life. How many hours will the puppy be left alone? Do you work from home, commute long hours, or travel frequently? Puppies need companionship, routine, and regular toilet breaks, particularly in the early months. If your schedule is busy or unpredictable, you may need to arrange help from family, friends, or a dog walker.
Your activity level matters too
Some dogs thrive on long hikes, training sessions, and constant engagement, while others are content with gentler walks and more relaxed home life. Choosing a high-energy breed when you prefer quiet evenings can lead to frustration for both you and your dog.
Think about your family and children
If you have children, their ages and experience with dogs are important considerations. Puppies are not toys; they nip, chew, scratch, and need calm, consistent handling. Younger children will need close supervision and guidance on how to interact safely and kindly.
It’s also worth considering the overall household dynamic. Is your home calm or busy? Do you already have pets? Are all family members equally committed to training, exercise, and financial responsibility? Consistency from everyone in the home helps a puppy feel secure and learn more quickly.
Choosing the right breed
Different breeds (or types of dog) have different characteristics, focussing on this rather than choosing a breed based purely on appearance is important, think about temperament, grooming needs, trainability, size, and health considerations.
Research what the breed was originally developed to do — for example, herding, guarding, retrieving, or companionship — as those instincts often remain strong today.
Ask yourself:
• How much exercise will this breed need daily?
• How much grooming and coat care is required?
• Is this breed typically vocal or reserved?
• How easy are they to train for first-time owners?
• Are there common health issues to be aware of?
If you’re unsure, a crossbreed or rescue puppy may also be an option, but the same questions about energy, size, and temperament still apply.
Before you collect your puppy
Preparation before collection day is just as important as choosing the puppy itself.
Make sure you have:
• A safe sleeping area or crate prepared
• Appropriate food recommended by the breeder or rescue
• Puppy-safe toys and chews
• A plan for toilet training and night-time routines
• A registered vet and knowledge of vaccination timelines
It’s also helpful to discuss early socialisation, training methods, and realistic expectations. Puppies do not arrive fully trained — they need patience, structure, and guidance from day one.
Getting support before you decide
One of the most valuable steps you can take is to talk things through with a professional before committing. A short conversation can help you assess whether now is the right time, which type of dog would suit you best, and how to start off successfully.
That’s why I now offer a dedicated pre-puppy consultation call. This friendly, practical session allows you to ask questions about lifestyle suitability, breed choices, family readiness, and what to expect in those crucial first weeks. My aim is to help you feel confident in your decision and fully prepared for the journey ahead.
If you’re thinking about getting a puppy and would like clear, honest guidance before taking the next step, I’d love to help. The right preparation leads to a happier puppy, a calmer home, and a lifelong partnership built on understanding from the very beginning.
I’m here to support you and your dog as you build a stronger, more confident, and more harmonious partnership. Whether you’d like to book a training session, ask a question, or explore how my services can help your canine companion thrive, I’m always happy to hear from you. I look forward to connecting with you and your dog.
