The Trials And Tribulations Of Owning And Training A Puppy!

On Thursday 8th August Brin the whippet joined our family, he was rehomed because his previous owner had become ill and unable to look after him.

We hadn’t been looking for a puppy and Brin was already 5 months old so we took Logi and Sonic to meet him and we all agreed he could come and live with us. And so, two whippets became three!

We knew Brin hadn’t done any formal training before, so I immediately looked for a puppy class to join as soon as possible. We settled on Jolene (Tibaydin Dog Training) at the House of Muddy Paws because I have known her for quite a while and knew her training style would suit Brin and I going forward.

Many people asked me why I was going to training when I am a dog trainer, but I believe classes benefit any dog and having feedback from other trainers is always useful. Sometimes you are too close to the problem to see the best solutions! Plus, I wanted Brin to learn to work around other dogs and classes are a great opportunity to work with distractions in a supervised and safe environment.

As well as puppy class I wanted to see if Brin would enjoy some dog sports as this is something I love to do with my dogs. After some investigation, I found Jill Berry, who has masses of experience training obedience dogs and holds classes quite near me. And I decided he could come with Logi and Sonic and join in with some scent training and see how he gets on with that.

I hope that you will enjoy reading my blog about the trials and tribulations of owning and training a puppy and know that everyone has their ups and downs with their puppies no matter where they start from and how much knowledge they have.

Having a puppy is a great excuse for continuing to expand my dog knowledge and experience - and I love to learn new things!
